New to backpacking in Greece?

WHEN TO VISIT THE GREEK ISLANDS

The tourist season in the Aegean is realistically from Late-April to Mid-October with the weather at either end of this period possibly unpredictable and July & August positively infernal. The air is cleaner in May and the landscape a good bit greener while in September the sea is at it's warmest but some of the smaller islands (Sikinos for example) may be getting ready to shut up shop.

Other times when it may be difficult to find rooms are Easter, The Festival of the Panagía on August 15th or during an election when people return to their birthplace to cast their vote (voting is compulsory in Greece).

With so many saints and associated festivals it is also possible that you may inadvertently arrive on an island celebrating but this would be hard to try and predict.
